Allysin - Winter Portraits
As I stare out my window at the evening sun and the fading leaves I realize that my life has been so busy that I have a stash of hundreds of photos that I haven't shared yet! Don't worry I won't share them all . . .
At least not all at once. ;)
I feel like this year my photography and editing style has began to shift and morph from my past overly bright, warm and crisp portraits to something a little more grungy, shadowed and film grainy.
Maybe it's a reflection of my outlook on life? Or a narrative on how life, like my art, becomes more complex the more you experience and know?
But that is something that needs more time for introspection, so not today!
My sisters were brave enough to venture into a cold January day (yes, it's been almost a year!!) to capture these portraits, and they turned out to be some of my favourite to date!

Wedding - Luke & Candice
It was a very busy April Saturday, but one filled with magic as I watched one of my best friends marry the love of her life. (You might remember this couple from their engagement photos. )
For this wedding not only was I the photographer, but I was also a bridesmaid and learned how to build a rose bouquet to help with the flower arrangements (now let's talk halo!). It definitely took some creative planning, but in the end we pulled it off, and I am just so happy to have been a part of it.
Luke & Candice are two of the kindest and most compassionate people I know. They both work in the field of social work because they have such a passion for helping people.
They are cat adopters
Plant growers
Tea drinkers
And Luke is an artist.
Candice has been my friend since college, and she is always the first to bring people together.
She extends hospitality generously.
She remembers birthdays
And anniversaries
And always gives love from the heart.
I love any reason to celebrate her, and am thankful to have gained Luke as a friend.

Introducing My Best Friend - Brittany
It was a chilly April evening before our salsa dance lessons when I finally talked my bestie into posing for some photographs.
I think every artist - whether you're a photographer, painter, videographer - basically anyone who loves to capture moments, expressions, the essence of human beings - knows what it is like to have someone they dream of capturing.
For me one of those people is Brittany.
The conditions weren't quite ideal. It was chilly, mostly overcast, and a little too late to be considered golden hour, but we grasped the opportunity and made the most of it.
I actually enjoy the shadowy grain from the lack of light - I think it evokes this brood-y type of emotion in the photos. And combined with shooting at a large aperture - it evokes this feeling of mystery and magic - the city at night. With memories of college midnight coffee runs. Late night birthday dinner celebrations. Or walking home from the bus and being fully aware of how big the city is, and how magical to just be a small, integral part of the thriving essence of a city alive at night . . . or maybe that's just me. :)
I can't wait to talk Britt into more photos in the future. I'm thinking magic hour and either a field or a forest - which I think would be a great fit for her minimalistic style.
Look for those in the future, but for now - enjoy!
Engagement - Erin & Mark
Erin grew up in my hometown - a small community in rural Ontario.
Mark is from Ontario.
God brought them both to a camp in Alberta - where they met and began to fall in love.
And I had the privilege of taking their engagement photos.
So on a freezing cold December day we made our way out to a Christmas tree field near my parents' house. And this was the result.
